The unit is assessed through 3 tasks set by the OCR. Tasks are marked internally using a mark scheme set by OCR.

The unit is assessed through a 1 hour and 40 min written examination paper set in three sections:
Section A: Multiple choice questions
Section B: Short-answer and extended answer questions
Section C: Data questions with the use of a data booklet.

The laboratory skills are assessed through 4 different ways:
Activity A: General practical competence
Activity B: Qualitative observation [14 marks]
Activity C: Quantitative observation [14 marks]
Activity D: Preparation of a chemical [12 marks]

Activity c & d can be taken together in a multi-stage experiment or separately.
